The Uninvited Movie Trailer

Even though this is the trailer, it is a good example of the errie ness of the music and how it has a child like feel to it. I refer to one shot when they cross their pinkies, this shows how innocent they are. Then the music when the piano is the dominant sound. This trailer also gives a sense of the tension arised in the film as this is portrayed through the editing throughoutthe trailer. Also the film is set in a woods in america quit far away from anywhere with alot of people this is what we tryed to achieve through locating our two m inute opening in a woods. It gives a sense of isolation and this makes it more freaky.

Evaluation

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
My two minute opening is generic to a physcological thriller becasue we set the opening in a woods which is a generic cliche. Howeer we challenged this by trying to change it a bit and mix it up by putting in location shots also we didn't fall into a cliche by having someone folowing the protagonist or anyone lurking in the woods watching the protagonist. We challenge these generics by having it filmed it daylight instead of nighttime. The conventions we used defines our hybrid genre. For example the locket and it's whispers this specific convention messes with your mind and makes you think deeper into it's purpose in the film. It is also creepy as it's not a living being doing the whispering it's supernatural. It gives off the thought that it can happen to anyone.

How does your media product represent particular social groups?
Our media product focuses mainly on males however the antagonist is female. Gender is sub-verted in our media product as the female has more power and dominance than the man. She is controlling him and making him suffer for what he did to her. In our media product tennegae boys are represented to be heart breakers and people that can latch on and off when they want. This links to our target audience because our targeted audience is tenneagers and people that have to deal with the loss of love.

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
I feel this media product would be distributed by a major hollywood studio. I think this because it has a catchy storyline and the horror of a proper film. Also i think that major hollywood films focus more now on phycological thrillers to torment the mind and it makes the film more creepy if the actor/ actress is expericancing something that is not human, being tortured by the brain and the powerfullnss of the mind and imagination. My product is also similar to the generic horror taht we see on our screens. Our film would be released because it has some brand new food for thought as it focuses on teenage love being the killer and how the brain reacts to rejection and the sting of love. One of the conventions for love is the locket as it's usually something you keep memorable pictures in of a loved one and it was in the shape of a heart means that what ever lays inside the locket means something to that person. The setting could also be symbolic of love as the woods in most roamntic films is where characters take strolls thorugh parks and have picnics in the trees, its an enchanting place for a young couple in love. However it could also be a vague place where you never know what might happen.

Who would be the audience for your media product?
The audience for our media product would be mainly focused on young adults. The age range would be from 15-25. This seems like a huge age gap as these two ages differ hugely as they both think differently. However is because our movie plays with the concept of an immature mind for love and the brutalness of young love. We first thought about making it and 18 but it would cut out alot of the audience and the criteria for a 15 rated movie best suited our film. Other films that are similar to ours are 'The unborn' and 'The uninvited' this is because they both focus on supernatural beings haunting people. They both focus on the brain and how powerful it really is.

How did you attract / address your audience?
We attracted our audience by researching what our audience wanted to see and by letting them decide what we should focus on and what sort of things they like to see in a horror movie. We also gave out questionnaires so that we could find out what sort of auidence we would attract when we put our own ideas forward. Most of our audience were females and aged 15-16. There are certain points in the film which was directly aimed at the boys when they hear the womans voice saying take me back then the boy running away it shows just how powerful women our and how much they involve themselves in boys. Most of the shots we used are low angles and when the boy looks at the locket he is looking down at it this can be shown that the boy is ahnging his head in shame for what he did to the antagonist. When the audience were asked who would they put themselves in thre position of they said the girl and that they want revenge on the boy. However some said the boy because the audience themselves say that they feel vunerable as the boy does. This has a huge impact on the outlook on the film and hoiw we have portrayed the protagonist to be victimised by the supernatural beings.

What have we learnt about technologies from the process of constructing the product?
From constructing the the product i have found that camera are tricky things. I know how to work them but getting the right angles was difficult. During the process i mainly stuck to the editing and finding the soundtracks and the text that we were going to use. Tripods weren't easy either we always had th borken one so we also tryed to keep the tripod balanced whilst working on moving the camera and trying not to jolt the camera atall. During the process there were times when we weren't getting any work done and we were well behind schedule however when the deadline came closer we pulled our act together and started getting everyhting done and working on shots and putting the material together. The editing software we used was adobe premiere pro. I found it easy to use and got to grips with the effects i could use on the footage, i found the effects useful when our film was in post production.

Looking back on your preliminary task, what do you feel that you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?
Looking back at the planning for the preliminary task we definatley got on track with this in the actual opening of our thriller. The storyboarding was the  hardest part i thought becasue we had to draw it our on paper and as we first started we didn't know what we wanted the shots to be until we filmed some of it howeer we just drew a random outline. The animatic really made a difference into what we wanted to happen in the actual thriller and it gave us a sense of camera use and effects we would use in the final cut. Some specific shots we used were changed so we could represent a character in a certain way and also portray something to the auidence like the locket we wanted it to stand out so a soft focus was used and it was always centralised in shot. From when we started in the continuity task i wasn't that comfortable with using the technology however as the project moved forward i became more comfotable with using premiere pro and using the camera although one thing i really hated all the way through was the text. We used the website 'dafont' and i couldn't figure out how to import the text or to use the text.

Audience feedback

Audience Feedback

I posted the final of our video on facebook so that firends could have a look at what I had been working on and give some creative criticism as to what they thought was good and bad. Most of the comments I recieved were really helpful as to what was good and bad from our target audience. Clearly since it was on facebook some comments were just  ' Thats was well good'. Not particulary helpful byt still good because the comments came from our target audience. These are a few examples of the feedback we got:

the music is nice and atmospheric and combined with the long lingering shots of the trees and the way the camera pans round, it adds an eerie element of suspense. but your names don't have capital letters

i think it's a great opening, as it doesn't have to much of a story and leaves the viewer engaged. I like the suspense of the pans, but feel they do slightly drag on. I love the music as it adds to the suspense, and i love the title at the end

I loved the music - really chilling! And the whispering was great, I have to agree :) I think this is a really cool start!!

Love the timing of the music and the whispering. Really builds up the suspense! Love it!

The music

E:\Dreamscape.mp3

E:\Eerie Angel-1.mp3

E:\Eerie Angel-2.mp3

These are the files of the music that we have chosen for our two minute opening. We have three becaue we couldn't decide which one suited the opening the best. The are all eeire and create the right sense of atmosphere so to decide we played each track to the sequecne and see what music fitted with the shots that we had taken. In the end we decided to go for eerie angel 2 since we thought that the track best suited the images and shots that were on screen.

The Unheard Final

Initial storyline and why we changed it

Ok, so the initial storyline and shots was that we would have our protagonist riding a bike in the woods and he falls off his bike then, we were going to have four or five shots of him blinking and the camera at a point of view angle giving the scene more   sense of atmosphere. Next we were going to have the protagonist find the locket left by the antagonist a close-up of the locket then have the protagonist running off and stumbling backwards. This sketch was very under timed and this sequence came up to a shocking 56 seconds, 1 minute 4 seconds under time basically a fail. So next we thought of how to add some time to the sequence as the footage we had was fine and we thought that the location was excellent. So we then thought of having the footage the same and at the begining having some loaction shots instead of the blinks and to cut up this sequence of woods we would have the titles. And at the end of the sequence we would have him go to talk to his friend at his house but then we discussed how it would change locations without it being smooth so this idea was sent to the bottom of the pile. Second to last we thought of the same sequence at the beggining and then at the end we would replay the first set of images and to break it up we would have a voice over the top playing the mother of the protagonist asking where he was and that she was worried. We tried this out however it was boring to watch for 34 seconds so yet again we were back to the drawing board. Finally we came up with a bit at the beggining about a different protagonist being shot walking up an alleyway and then lying dead in a woods. then the sequence from the begginging and some flashing text instead of just fading in and out.

The text we finally chose

We finally chose the text 'crappy dan' This text has the look that it has been written by an infant and we wanted that childlike feel to the text. It also looked freaky in the sense that 'The unheard' character thinks like a child this gives it a sense of imaturity.

Initial ideas of names

These are the initial ideas for our film name.

Phsyco thriller -
- The unnamed
- The woods
- Whispers in the wind
- The unheard
- The forgotten
- Her

In the end we decided to choose the unheard. This was because we felt that for the message we wanted to get across and for the atmosphere we wanted to create that this title best suited the film. Furthermore 'The unheard' seemed to give of a sense that it is a mystery who the unheard is and why they are unheard it sounds more harrowing then the other titles aswell as the other factors.

The other titles were good and we were considering wether to go with 'The forgotten' or 'The unheard'. In both titles the word 'The' is very vauge and doesn't tell you alot about weather it is a male or a female or why they are 'The' forgotten'/Unheard' in this movie.

Tuesday 1 March 2011

this is the first draft of our two minute opening. The video is a lot shorter than two minutes and needs more footage. We have discussed a few ideas of maybe having a member of our team featured in the background  creating more of a tension between her and the main character and we will make her look scary. There is also a lot of background noise in the footage so have now discussed how to cover up the background noise. E.g. Tension / eerie music. Finally during the footage it looks like we have broken the 180 degree rule so we will reshoot this  part but have to make it connote with the weather and time of day so it won't break any media rules of continuity.

Change of location

Our initial idea was to film at black park and find a heavy wooded area with a pathway of sorts but not a public footpath so we didnt get members of the public walking into shot. However after discussion we decided that some members in the group lived quite far away from black park and sometimes unable to make shooting schedules so we decided as a group to move the location to nearer school so that during lessons we could go down the woods and film and that way it was easy to get to and everyone could then be present so it would benefit the whole group. However whilst recording we got a lot of backgorund noise from people walking dogs and the cars on the road so we decided that we would film at black park afterall since the backgorund noise wouldn't be as loud so it would be easier to use it and put music over the top of some of the footage. Overall black park was better because the woods were more thick and the chances of someone walking through shot was minimal compared to how big black park is.

New Storyboard

This is our new storyboard  of what to do whilst in the woods. This will give us the extra time we need in our opening without making it boring or repetitive.

FINAL schedule

Depending on the weather.... this shedule will be kept to...

February

15th - Plan out a plan of the day
16th - Start going through the storyboard with actors and actresses

22nd - Film the day scene
23rd - Edit and delete unuseful material
24th - Edit
25th - Do some reshoots
27th - Do final reshoots and editing ready for monday morining

I have published yet another shooting shedule because due to weather and ILP days at school we have become behind on our previous shedule and february hallf term would be perfect to do some reshooting and start working towards our deadline.

What we plan to do and changes made

We plan to get all filming done during the february half term and before after this it will leave us enough time to edit and reshoot anything that we need to do. This also gives us one solid week to get all the filming done and dusted and during this time i will also be editing the material we have just to keep the process moving onwards instead.

A few changes have been made to our storyboard, we have now added a house scene to lengthen our opening more, and we are in the process of trying to make it a bit more on edge and creating tension for the audience to pull them in and then not carry on the storyline so it will leave the audience wanting more and leave their minds to wonder about what happens in the end.
